Desipramine is used to treat depression. This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. This medication belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants.
This risk may increase if you use certain drugs (such as diuretics /" water pills ") or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Talk to your doctor about using desipramine safely. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of QT prolongation.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction : hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Keep using the medication as directed and l your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. It may take up to 4 weeks before your symptoms improve.
Serious side effects may be more likely in older adults and those who are ill or debilitated.

You must wait at least 5 weeks after stopping fluoxetine (Prozac) before you can take desipramine.

In more severely ill patients, dosage may be further increased gradually to 300 mg/day if necessary. Dosages above 300 mg/day are not recommended. The usual adult dose is 100 to 200 mg per day.

Doses above 150 mg/day are not recommended in these age groups. Dosage should be initiated at a lower level and increased according to tolerance and clinical response to a usual maximum of 100 mg daily. In more severely ill patients, dosage may be further increased to 150 mg/day.
Not recommended for use in children (see WARNINGS ).

Conversely, at least 14 days should be allowed after stopping NORPRAMIN before starting an MAOI intended to treat psychiatric disorders (see CONTRAINDICATIONS ).
